Bio
‘The absence of the normal and the presence of the abnormal.’
We (Humans) were evolutionarily hardwired to detect these instances; warning signs, threats and ambushes. In contemporary society however, too often these instincts are subdued, muted and obfuscated by our obsession with instant gratification, facilitated by digitised lifestyles. The result creates uncontested space for nefarious behaviour with impunity. If it’s not on a phone it's not cared about. My practice challenges this modern human condition and seeks to encourage contemplation by its audience. In doing so i aim to question the transgressional shift from community to inflated self-worth and hyper-consumerism.
My former career significantly informs my work; 33 years in the Royal Marines provisioned a global, culturally and socially rich immersion with first-hand experience of both the best and the most despicable actions of human kind. Fine-tuned emotional intelligence in complex, congested and often contested situations provided me with astute communicative insight. Additionally, extensive periods at sea, in the Littoral, the Arctic and the Desert yielded a seasoned panoramic of the Humanity, the World and the Climate.
Through recollection, assimilation, deconstruction and reconstruction I explore and present surreal, occasionally abstract interactions, moments; accessible and familiar to all but simultaneously discrete. In doing so I aim to provoke an emotive response, incite behaviours of positivity, expose injustices and deceit and undermine corrosive sentiment. In my work I offer the viewer an opportunity to realise their distraction, a provocation to interrogate popular narratives and more so to inquire about the unseen and unheard.
